Ether in physics
According to ancient and medieval science, aether , also known as the fifth element or quintessence, is the material that fills the region of the universe beyond the terrestrial sphere. The concept of aether was used in several theories to explain several natural phenomena, such as the propagation of light and gravity. In the late 19th century, physicists postulated that aether permeated space, providing a medium through which light could travel in a vacuum, but evidenc… WebMichelson-Morley experiment, an attempt to detect the velocity of Earth with respect to the hypothetical luminiferous ether, a medium in space proposed to carry light waves. However, it was not necessarily to his original conception of ether, and it was not "despite the empirical successes" of special relativity. Special relativity and Lorentz's ether theory not only produce identical empirical predictions but are equivalent in an even stronger sense, see e.g. …
Webether, any of a number of organic compounds whose molecules contain two hydrocarbon groups joined by single bonds to an oxygen atom. The most common of these compounds is ethyl ether, CH 3 CH 2 OCH 2 CH 3, often called simply ether, a colorless, volatile liquid with a distinctive odor; its IUPAC name is ethoxyethane. Ethyl ether boils at 34.5 ... In physics, aether theories (also known as ether theories) propose the existence of a medium, a space-filling substance or field as a transmission medium for the propagation of electromagnetic or gravitational forces. Since the development of special relativity, theories using a substantial aether fell out of use in modern physics, and are now replaced by more abstract models. This early modern aether has little in common with the aether of classical elements from which th…
WebJan 30, 2024 · 31. We were asked a question to differentiate the difference between the idea of an Ether and the idea of Quantum Fields. When I really began to think about it I concluded that the ideas are the same. The two are essentially the same idea. They both consist of the idea that 'something' permeates all of space and acts on everything. WebSep 13, 2024 · $\begingroup$ @user47014 "Aether" has a specific use in physics, and "ether" has multiple other uses. In this physics context I think that "aether" would be more appropriate to avoid ambiguity (however much it may tax this mysterious country you mention to use one additional letter :-) ). $\endgroup$ –
