Gifford's Ice Cream & Candy Co. was founded in May 1938 by John Nash Gifford, George Milroy, John L. Tillotson, Leslie J. Daley, and Mary Frances Gifford. The original incorporation was on September 11, 1938. The first store was opened at 8101 Georgia Avenue in Silver Spring, Maryland, where Gifford's sold six original ice cream flavors.
