In the year 1582, Queen Elizabeth I granted rights to export wheat, barley and malt with the proceeds to be used for the maintenance and well-being of the pier and the town of Cromer. The first recent pier at Cromer was a 210 foot jetty built in 1822.
Since 1996 the society has presented an annual Pier of the Year award, as voted by the society's members. The rules state that only piers currently open to the public, and piers which have not won the award in the last five years, are eligible.
